Super Baldy Kart is a ROM hack created by Dirtybag of the NES game Super Mario Kart which delivers to players and all new experience including music, tracks, characters, and item.
Created in 1992 for the SNES by Nintendo, Super Mario Kart is a kart racing game and the first in a long line of Mario Kart games to come following Super Mario Kart‘s groundbreaking success. It is credited for creating the “kart racing” subgenre spawning an influx of similar games such as Sega‘s Sonic Drift, Ubisoft‘s Street Racer, and Atari‘s Atari Karts, to name a few. Super Mario Kart changed the rules of driving games and provided the world with one of the most addictive multiplayer experiences ever.

Super Baldy Kart is one of the most comprehensive Super Mario Kart hacks that I have seen out there. This hack replaces almost every element of the original game and provides a unique experience. From the title screen to the very end, every aspect of this game has been tweaked to the point where it only resembles the original game in technicality.
It is hard to say for sure if this hack is based off of some other franchise but regardless it is extremely well made and enjoyable throughout. With pretty much every aspect of the game standing as completely new, this hack offers and experience that stands out on its own.
There are plenty of behind the scenes addition made to the game that you can find in the ReadMe files. The creator has add psuedo-hacks in such as playing your racer in tiny mode or the ability to save a ghost racer, similar to what you would see in modern Kart games, and race against to improve your own skills.
Title Screen
The title screen of this hack is reminiscent of the title screen of the original game, as presented below.
Graphics
Each level has been completely redesigned with new tile sets. Furthermore, items and hazards have all been changed as well. Character have not only been given a makeover but their animations have been altered as well. As far as Mario Kart hacks go, the graphics look great and seem to fit the game well.
Gameplay
Super Baldy Kart presents a challenge that feel quite similar to the original as far as difficulty goes when facing off against the AI. The tracks appear to be well balanced and avoid through too many strange curve balls at the player.
Something that you don’t see often is reworked stats for the driver. It’s stated by the creator that the stats have been changed and you can feel which characters are supposed to resemble which racer from the original game but it does feel like they don’t quite function the same way. I would have liked to see a screen showing the stats, like the original, so that I knew what I was getting into before him. Still, very fun to see how all the racers control.
Sound
This hack presents custom music from the title screen all the way to the end of the game. The music is a welcome change of pace and accents the other changes made to the game quite well. Many of the song are remixed soundtracks from other games.

Conclusion
So is this game worth a try? Super Baldy Kart is impressive through and through. It is not often that we see Super Mario Kart hacks of this scope. While many hold up to the quality standard, many do not push to the extent that this one has. If you are an avid Kart player and looking for something totally new, this is certainly the hack for you.
