Packed full of charm, The Legend of Banjo-Kazooie: The Bear Waker is the perfect mashup of two timeless classics and provides long time Banjo-Kazooie fans with something new to throw themselves at since the last console release of a Banjo-Kazooie game way back in 2008. It combines the complex world and adventure of Wind Waker with the platforming and action focus of Banjo-Kazooie seamlessly into one grand and whimsical experience.

The tale follows Banjo and Kazooie as he wakes up on Outset Island and is informed Link’s acquaintance, the King of Red Lions, that Link was last seen returning to his home but no one has been able to get in contact with him. It is falls on Banjo and Kazooie to find the wayward hero.

Although you will not have the chance to explore the vast world offered in The Wind Waker as Banjo and Kazooie, this mod stands out as a beautifully crafted and stunning exploration of concept. Short but sweet (players may be able to get a few hours out of it) this mod is a work of art.

Graphics

The graphics for this The Legend of Banjo-Kazooie: The Bear Waker have been completely overhauled from the base game as it implements all new models, items, objects, and tilesets to fit the Banjo-Kazooie theme. Overall, the mod looks fantastic presenting a number of familiar Wind Waker locations with downscaled graphics for the N64 engine it runs on. In spite of the necessary downscaling, the mod manages to present itself as being as visually stunning as The Wind Waker which released on the Gamecube (which allowed a much higher polycount and texture resolution than the N64 could handle.)

Gameplay

Gameplay in The Legend of Banjo-Kazooie: The Bear Waker is very similar to the gameplay in Banjo-Kazooie with many of the same moves and functions. Players will collect classic items such as Notes, Jiggies, and Honeycombs, and more while exploring Outset Island and fending off various BK themed enemies. The mod delivers the open-world adventuring style of The Wind Waker with BK’s own exploration oriented gameplay and crafts them together into a unique world of its own with depth and charm. While exploring, you will face bosses as well as unlock new areas through beautiful locales.

Sound

A combination of Wind Waker songs as well as BK songs were used for this mod, all of which were carefully and meticulously crafted and are presented in an amazing quality comparable to the quality of the original tracks that they cover.
